Fibo Spinner (2025)
Stainless steal, metal, electric motor, powder coating150 × 170 × 55 cm

In perpetual rotation, Fibo Spinner evokes the traces of a past movement, a circular apparatus bearing the imprint of an action now unseen. The circles within the rim evokes Duchamp’s Anémic Cinéma, where spinning disks dissolve the boundary between motion and image, and here, between mechanism and specter.

Hovering between utility and symbol, the work mirrors an endless circuit, yet no creature inhabits this loop. By displacing the human form into an algorithmic ideal, Fibo Spinner asks us to reconsider our measure of space, movement, and the very possibility of inhabiting a place. What remains is the quiet insistence of rotation, a gesture both mathematical and lyrical, that charts a route between the intellect’s abstraction and our innate sense of endless cycles.

Anesthetics, 2025Chromed steel, scaffolds joints, acrylics, lacquer
80 × 80 × 190 cm
Modern design, like anesthesia, numbs sensation. In the aftermath of war, smooth glass panels and polished steel calmed frayed nerves, just as ether and cocaine dulled pain. Walter Benjamin described war’s survivors as mute (Experience and Poverty, 1933), unable to communicate their trauma—modernism mirrored this silence. Its surfaces resist touch, memory, and history, offering sterility over warmth. Like anesthesia, modern design soothes but erases, creating a world where nothing lingers, where experience slides away without leaving a trace.

Brushed stainless steel, galvanized steel, concrete
80 × 60 × 220 cm
A meditation on endurance, defiance, and permanence, Without Flinching is a reflection engaging with the act of standing as both burden and bastion. It is the act of existing unshaken, of costing something, of measuring height, of enduring pain. The work interrogates this essence: to stand is to resist and to bear a cost, a duality woven into its very fabric.

Text by Tal Gilad in collaboration with Erik Thörnqvist
“When I was 18, I was cycling home in the middle of the night from MakeOut It was the only gay bar in the Arctic hemisphere at the time, and I could see the iron furnace in the Luleå sky where the fumes would colour it yellow.People from northern Finland, Tromsö-Norway or Wilhelmina-Sweden, would drive for six hours to party there. The little Greek restaurant (now a pizza kebab place) would turn every month into this epic queer club.”
Erik Thörnqvist, From an interview with Kristian Vistrup Madsen for New Era Magazine.
The only way out is through (Robert Frost)- a known expression one uses when faced with a difficult situation- it is best to deal with the hardship and come through the other side.
Make Out in Luleå was the only gay club in Northern Sweden during 2006-2016.
It was active monthly until the founder, Sophie Gunnarsson, moved to Stockholm almost a decade ago. The neon sign Make Out, Make Through is located outside- not far from the Konsthall - and is an artwork/sign that celebrates the culture and legacy of this institution.
In collaboration with Gunnarsson -The club will reopen for one night only on the vernissage!

Make-out (besides kissing and holding a person sexually -according to Cambridge Dictionary) means to find or grasp the meaning of something but also to succeed.
Make, subjectively, is the verb for creation in association with art.
Making it out or through indicates surviving an event (or a place).

What is queer culture? Where does the personal intertwine with a collective memory of generation y/z?
What is (‘gay’) art if it is not high art? As the majority of the most celebrated classic artists were (according to art history) Homosexual? It may be that queer culture/ gay art contain homoerotic elements, the politics of gay rights. Yet, it can also encompass our history's teachings or the future's inspiration.
What does being gay mean in the so-called progressive West of today?
Will gay culture erase itself to assimilate into mainstream culture?
Or will there always be a place to be authentic - and what is that?
Are we on the verge of a shift in values? Just like the shift after the Weimar Republic a hundred years ago?
The archetype of gay/ Coming of age/ Discovering worlds/ Looking from the outside- in.
Make Out Make Through is the personal journey of an artist who is proud to be from and return to the North.
“Bruno Latour said- We have never been modern.
I respond: Can anything ever be queer?
In the words of José Esteban Muñoz-
Queerness is not a static presence but a force constantly moving between the past and the future. It is a desire to transcend the current while simultaneously saying this world is insufficient- something is missing an utmost desire that guides me forward so I can envision another world.”

Language sometimes reveals hidden histories, dark, shameful, and unforgivable.
This homophobic slur Finook (Italian) dates to a time when gays were murdered and burned in abundance in Europe - they used fennel to mask the smell of burning flesh. Will it be reclaimed to the queer vocabulary? Turning from a dark meaning to being part of the symbolism of power in knowing what happened isn’t going to be tolerated in our society ever again?

A flower, a fruit, facial hair, jewellery, a piece of clothing - a ‘tell’ to help the ones with a broken gaydar. This collection- an array of day-to-day objects, is displayed on custom-made podiums for an eye-level view from the window sill to the main space.
All hold symbolic meaning in public/private and historic for LGBTQIA+ individuals as signifier objects that help us to find each other in the shadows.
It is what we can today read as queer aesthetics before it got refined and blended into mainstream culture by the 1990s Metrosexuals.

This sculpture’s genealogy is the series of Standmaschine I and II, and RaumPlanner but also a much earlier Cartesian Crawler (exhibited in this very space in 2020)A true romance between Standmaschine and Crawler gave birth to a natural-born sitter.Inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s 1927 cantilever chair, MR 20 stands for what was once innovative and now is vintage. it is an ode to forgotten ideas of advancement tangled with conformism and totalitarianism. At the same time, Sitter is an almost complete abstraction of a humanised chair- an evolution stepping away from furniture into the raw metal frame again.

These blowouts originated from 1980s postcards of 1880s photos by Wilhelm Von Gloeden, a German photographer who worked mainly in Italy.
They are nudes of men, taken in nature in classic poses and are sexual as they are nudes
and maybe questionable as these are young men.
We don't know the(ir) story. We only see the posing and gestures they left as a form of queer ephemera.Their images have been cut out of the frame by the artist - we have an empty void- an anonymous silhouette- and the pastoral backdrop.
Pose echoes a shiny marble statue of a perfectly proportioned body, showcasing the strong arms product of no gym but the country life of a poor peasant blessed with a chiselled jawline and rock-hard abs. Captured in a moment of youth and innocence. A body to desire and admire- now dead, long gone and for us to see and walk through with our minds.

Aren't all of us living in the north worshipping the Sun as if it is the one true god?
On a cold day in late autumn, we cross the road to the sunny side, face the light, close our eyes, pause and smile. Sun was created out of a formalistic fascination with the visual signifier of the massive, nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma.
The 18th-century coin-inspired sun cog piece's appearance suggests a futuristic fantasy of neo-paganism being only associated with the will to reunite humanity and not to create divisions in society as it predates organised religions.

Hole + Politics of a Hole are part of a series of sculptures that reflect the historic shift toward white tiles in domestic spaces and promote an aesthetic of absolute cleanliness while also hinting at the anonymity of public sex. These artworks reinterpret the glory hole, integrating it into tile designs with smooth curves that highlight the oppressive aesthetic of Folkhemmet.

Hole- A tiled piece in ultramarine, white, and burnt umber, resembling enlarged nanotechnology details in mobile phones. This work comments on the dual nature of today’s technology, capturing intimate moments while invading privacy through surveillance.

Politics of a Hole- is a white-tiled wall version installation that activates the second space and creates a haul of infinite possibilities.

Some famous people were there, including Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Basquiat, Leonard Cohen, Victor Hugo, and Andy Warhol (unsigned).

Think of a Chair is a collection of doodles of a hypothetical chair drawn by Erik’s friends and colleagues.
The many drawings act as visual research, aside from his ongoing deep interest in the chair object that began a series of standing humanised sculptures. During the exhibition, you, the guests, are welcome to add to the collection. Kulturens Hus’ pedagogues will hold workshops with schools and groups during the exhibition period so the research will continue to grow.

The two realised they had some double copies when they moved in together.
The books make one think these might be essential reads for their generation, orientation and gender and made the artist reflect on our time when conservatives have a restrictive and oppressive idea of what a home is.
Through Kulturens Hus's open call, this collection grew to over twenty.

This work is a starting point and an invitation for members of the LGBTQIA+ community to donate their surplus books from their homes. The ongoing accumulation will create a collection that will be donated to the Luleå library and available to the local queer/curious reader.
This work joins a long tradition of artworks - including ‘Books’ by Lisa Tan that include the same surplus books of two lovers in the art world and use the photographic medium. Also, The Library of Unborrowed Books by Meric Algun is an inspiration.
Perhaps classic or cliché - judging every book by its cover. Can the spines already compose some hidden meaning? What poem do we write in our minds?

11 dec 2024 – 19 jan 2025
The Maria Bonnier Dahlin Foundation annually awards grants to young artists to support and promote their work. As part of the grant, an extensive exhibition is produced at Bonniers Konsthall where their works are shown to a large audience, often for the first time. The 2024 grant recipients explore in their artistry the human relationship to the world around them through sculpture and installation. They share an interest in architecture and a fascination with found objects. Anastasia Savinova transforms these materials into unique sculptural constructions that reflect on our ecology, while Erik Thörnqvist explores how abstract ideas and ideologies can take physical form through objects and social structures.

By reshaping traditional objects, Erik Thörnqvist (b. 1994) gives them new symbolic meaning that express agency and freedom, beyond their original functions. Particularly interested in the role of ornamentation within modernism, he questions its place in designed environments and explores how these aesthetic expressions can create space for subversive interpretations and queer representation. Deliberately coded and ambiguous, Thörnqvist’s works resist easy interpretations and defy norms in a powerful way, engaging the viewer to confront social issues and creating new narratives where body and identity can be renegotiated and redefined.

Raum Planner (2024) presents a 1:1 detail of the interior of Villa Müller, inspired by Adolf Loos’s ‘Raumplan’ concept, where rooms are given different height levels based on their function rather than being placed on separate floors. Here Thörnqvist explores the boundary between private and public, with themes of transparency and voyeurism. Inspired by architectural historian Beatriz Colomina’s analysis of Villa Müller in Sexuality and Space (1992), the work explores the tension between power and vulnerability, especially through an elevated seating area that allows for both observing and being observed.

The installation Un chant d’amour (2024), inspired by Jean Genet’s film with the same title, links to Thörnqvist’s themes through its exploration of boundaries, intimacy and the structures that dictates human interaction. Through the architecture of the prison and a scene where two prisoners share cigarette smoke through a straw to overcome isolation, the film highlights how people can be both close and unreachable. This reflects Thörnqvist’s interest in the body and power in constructed environments. Above all, the installation creates a place where fiction and reality meet – where we can fantasise about who is on the other side.

However, I have around 700 words to describe beyond what you vividly see and feel, yet also to invite you to engage with the insecurities that come with the freedom of subjective analysis and mindful interpretation.
Other Dead Giveaways A flower, a fruit, facial hair, jewellery, a piece of clothing – a giveaway to help the ones with a broken gaydar. This collection – an array of day-to-day objects – is displayed on custom-made podiums, all holding symbolic meaning in public/ private context and LGBTQIA+ history, as signifier objects that help us to find each other in the shadows. It is what we today read as queer aesthetics before it got refined and blended into mainstream culture by the 1990s metrosexuals. The texts on the labels are fictitious diary entries written and edited by AI.

Un chant d’amour A homage artwork in reference to Jean Genet’s only film- isolates the famous scene of cigarette smoke migrating between two sides of a prison cell wall through a thin straw. Although filmed in 1950, it will still take your breath away. It captures an enduring thirst for love and touch in solitary confinement – pure desire and tenderness. Discreetly, one can go and place one’s face on the fumes and fantasise about being fantasised about.

Standmaschine Previously described as a deconstruction of the European Modern project, these humanised chairs embody the intersection of contemporary and classic design. As popularity leads to replicas bought by the unaware, we must question: does authenticity matter? Ultimately, the furniture confronts us with its aesthetic qualities, challenging its intended functionality.

Politics of a Hole Is part of a series of sculptures that reflects the historic shift toward white tiles in domestic spaces and promotes an aesthetic of absolute cleanliness while also hinting at the anonymity of public sex. These artworks reinterpret the glory hole, integrating it into tile designs with smooth curves that highlight the oppressive aesthetic of Folkhemmet.

Finook Language can unearth hidden, dark histories. The homophobic slur Finook, from Italian finocchio (fennel), dates to a time when gays were murdered and burned in abundance in Europe – they used fennel to mask the smell of burning flesh. What does the casting of a bulb of fennel mean – like an industrial trompe l’oeil for a fake fruit bowl – a never-rotting vanitas where death doesn’t happen?

Étant Donnés: 1. Le Prêtre 2. Le Fermier 3. Le Fenouil (Given: 1. The Priest 2. The Farmer 3. The Fennel) This peephole work is made in reference to Duchamp’s super problematic work Étant donnés: 1. la chute d’eau et 2. le gaz d’éclairage (Given: 1. The Waterfall, 2. The Illuminating Gas) that has been suggested to be connected to the death of the black Dalia.

Krasch This pre-construction hybrid combines 3D scans of classic artworks, forming a fragmented, modern-day Greek god hero. It echoes the composition of Goya’s etching, This is Worse, from The Disasters of War, which features a dead man inspired by the Belvedere Torso. Art history teaches us that the most beautiful pieces are broken fragments, like the remains of Greek sculptures – a melancholic reminder of a glorious past that highlights what is forever lost.

Vaseline Vision The blurred abstract photograph, taken in Los Angels, near the infamous Vaseline Alley, captures a detail of a knock off ”Tom of Finland” T-shirt spotted in a shop window. The artist visited one of the most legendary cruising spots in gay history only to discover an empty parking lot. You can interpret this as an aestheticisation of All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt souvenir reflecting an attempt to glorify an experience of detachment.

Abseiling to a Gay Beach On the Côte d’Azur, there is a historic gay beach accessed through a corner of a traditional family beach. The journey involves navigating dangerous boulders, cliffs, and jagged rocks. The final stage of the 30-minute trek requires the abseiling of a five-meter rope, here recreated as an artwork. This representation can be a broader metaphor for the challenges marginalised groups still need to face today.

Before / After Is a found object – an illustration of what seems to be the moment before and the moment after (dinner). The Pictures Generation gesture of appropriation is shown surrounded by work that requires heavy labour. Reminiscent of a 1980s advertisement, it evokes a sense of romantic conceptualism. What happened?Somethingthatchangedeverything.

Sun Tree
takes its starting point in a coin from the 18th century that someone had
transformed into a cogwheel. A monetary means that became transformed into a
part of a mechanical system. The Sun Tree encompasses questions regarding
space, local history and acceleration.

The motifs
of the coins emerged during a workshop with two classes from Funboskolan in
2022, inspired by runestones nearby, fresco paintings in Funbo church, and local
modern symbols. The coins on the
sculpture are open to interpretation, resembling cogwheels, flowers, or suns,
speaking to the complexity of societal norms.

The repetitive form
echoes the shapes found within the traffic junction, while its roots in the
tunnel emphasize the underground setting – the roots, entwined within
the earth, serve as conduits between realms, bridging the chasm between surface
and subterranean depths.

I SAW IT WITH MY OWN HANDSwith Amin Zouiten, Erik Thörnqvist, Sahar Alkhateeb, Therese BülowDec 1, 2023–Jan 21, 2024*
I SAW IT WITH MY OWN HANDS is a group exhibition that insists on transcending linguistic confines to explore the depths of human interiority. Emerging from a slippage of mumbled, nonsensical language, it provokes a fundamental inquiry: What unfolds when language falls short in articulating our innermost thoughts and emotions?

The exhibition presents an eclectic range of mediums—sculpture, video, installation, sound, scent—venturing into the concealed facets of our interior worlds. It encourages contemplation on existentialism through artistic interpretation.

Inspired by Teju Cole’s profound insights in Known and Strange Things: Essays, I SAW IT WITH MY OWN HANDS explores the concept of internal weather, emphasising the perpetual dialogue between our internal realms and materiality. In parallel with Jean-Paul Sartre’s monumental work, Being and Nothingness, it venerates the profound artistic freedom entwined with the inner self.

Through Therese Bülow’s transformative sculptures that challenge the living/non-living dichotomy and Sahar Alkhateeb’s site-specific installation, blending malleability with a desire for both stillness and motion, the exhibition cultivates captivating tension within its artistic expression. Amin Zouiten’s introspective video and sound installations probe reality’s distortion, urging contemplation on perception, while Erik Thörnqvist’s abstract works deconstruct foundational concepts of the European modern project.

Each artist’s unique expression invites viewers to reimagine boundaries, perception, and physicality through a visceral and embodied experience.

spelling slipping ellipsis
Ester Fleckner, Frédéric Gies, Sixten Hatfield, Linda Lamignan, Fathia Mohidin, Burcu Sahin, Erik Thörnqvist, Paola Torres Núñez del Prado

spelling slipping ellipsis presents a group of artists who translate histories, bodies, and desires into form, sound and movement. Abstraction is central to the exhibition, both as an artistic language and as a response to the entanglement between identity, representation and figuration. The artists engage with abstraction in order to transcend boundaries, blur contours and outline concrete forms from complex narratives.

The exhibition defies the notion of the body as a stable matter, as well as the idea of a fixed identity, by instead approaching embodiment as a process. When the works allude to the body they do so in fragments, spectrally, unfolding it as a vast shifting archive charged with unfathomable forces and memories. Sexual desire, extractivism, transcendence and the relationship between body and architecture are some of the recurrent themes in the exhibition. When addressing these topics, the artists evoke different locations and timelines.

Ester Fleckner (born in 1983, based on the island of Møn in Denmark) shows a series of woodcut prints, a queer take on abstraction where human anatomy is disassembled. Frédéric Gies (born in 1973, based in Malmö) explores the transcending power of techno music through a video installation and a new site-specific performance. Sixten Hatfield (born in 1978, based in Malmö) shares a series of drawings, paintings and texts that are part of their research on abstraction, art history and drag. Linda Lamignan (born in 1988, based in Copenhagen) shows a composition of hanging sculptures and a site-specific painting installation made with petroleum wax, unfolding the personal and political implications of the oil industry. Fathia Mohidin (born in 1985, based in Stockholm) presents two installations that blend sound, sculpture, industrial materials and video, dissecting the gym as a space where discipline and desire are negotiated. Burcu Sahin (born in 1993, based in Oslo) shares a new poem, as a text in the catalogue and as a sound piece, revolving around memory translation. Erik Thörnqvist (born in 1994, based in Stockholm) dwells on the remnants of modernism and the exploitation of Sweden’s northern provinces with a group of steel sculptures. Paola Torres Núñez del Prado (born in 1979, based in Stockholm) shows a series of electronic embroideries and mixed-media paintings addressing the colonial violence forced on nature and indigenous communities.

Several of the artists are based in the Malmö-Copenhagen area, which may also comprise Lund, and all are well acquainted with the local context. This can also be said of the exhibition’s curators, Albin Hillervik (curator and director of Skånes konstförening) and Jari Malta (curator and writer), who are both based in Malmö.

Raumplanning on Vaseline AlleyGalleri Mejan, Stockholm11.11.2022–20.11.2022

Why am I longing for a time
that is long gone?I dream about being part of a
romanticized version of Un chant d’amour1, about visiting The Stud Bar in San Francisco in
the 70s, about the aesthetics of the machine society, a machine that
metaphorically fucks the world around me in a medieval fennel field. Here I reminisce about personal
narratives as well as historical events.

We traveled to the Côte d’Azur last
summer. We planned to remain for a week, but we ended up staying for two.
Eileen Gray’s E1027 villa was closed due to the pandemic. According to Google
maps, there is a historic gay beach nearby. So we went there, only to be met by
a ’so-called’ traditional family beach. After a while, we noticed guys weaving
their way through the blankets and yelling children, to the corner of the
beach, our journey on that path was dangerous. Boulders, cliffs, and jagged
rocks had to be climbed for thirty minutes. We had to use a rope for abseiling
five meters in the last phase of the steep trail – to finally arrive, at a
beach intended to habituate us as gay men and our desires- as such.

*

As I walked past the house, I was reminded
of my childhood growing up in a steel production town. A functionalist housing
complex was gradually torn down and replaced with a postmodern structure
suitable for a new working class. The fog from the steel plant would sometimes
color the sky in a strange spectrum from orange to pink. This occurred when the
charcoal pellets burned and the attempt to extract the gas failed. The chemical
clouds could be seen floating over the town from factory fires that raged all
night. The large furnace would appear as a lonesome stronghold. For forty
years, the charcoal oven has not yet stopped. Due to the constant thin layer of
coal that covers the area, the neighborhood beside the plant is known as Black
Island City.

*

The architectural features of gay clubs
suggest a fluctuating ambiguity of the gaze’s power structure. The architecture
cruises the visitor, where the details crop and disguise the bodies that move
through those spaces. Certain gay clubs have dark rooms; areas that have
minimal or no light sources at all. Through the act of cruising, brief intimate
relationships might then arise. It strikes me how prominent Adolf Loos’ notions
of bodily movement and the masculine gaze are in those environments, the gazed
upon is now veiled in darkness. Black leather and chromed steel that is present
within the fantasy of a German psychoanalysis reception- Charlotte Perriand’s
design of the lounge chair LC4 (Chaise longue basculante) was Included in the
Salon d’Automne 1929 in Paris2. Perriand’s
collaboration with Corbusier became a classic design of the International
Style. LC3 was initially produced by Thonet, in the catalog Perriand’s name was
excluded3.

*

On the last day in L.A, I had only one
photo left on the camera roll. At Vaseline Alley, I took a picture of a
T-shirt. It was a knockoff with a blurred-out ”ToF” logo on the front and a
sloppily hand-lettered ”Sissy Boy” on the back. Seeing the well-known street
and finding an empty parking lot- capturing this in a photo made me feel
detached from this space. After the fabled alley behind Circus of Books, I felt
disconnected from the neighborhood’s turbulent past. At least I have a photo to show I was
there.

*

Finocchio- Italian for fennel is a
derogatory slur like faggot, reminds us that the gays were sometimes used as
kindling for the stakes used to burn witches. Homosexuality was still widely
acceptable throughout the Renaissance, however, eradicated during the
witch-hunt. The persecution of homosexuals was so severe that its legacy is
engraved in our language4.

*

What does it mean to be a body in space?Correlating the corpses of burned
homosexual bodies - their stench
concealed with the smell of fennel in the Middle Ages with Club Kids dropping
dead on dance floors today, connecting the Raum Plan of Adolf Loos’
concept of space to dark rooms of gay clubs, comprehending the image of a
highly masculinized Tom of Finland5 body on a t-shirt against my body, discovering
the meaning of a journey to a historical gay landmark that can come to
disappoint me.Being there belongs to me while also the
feeling of being so far away.

Un chant d’amour is French writer Jean
Genet’s only film, which he directed in 1950. Because of its explicit homosexual content, the 26-minute movie was
long banned.
